Michael Freedman

Principal-in-Charge

Michael Freedman possesses an exceptionally broad range of expertise in architectural design and project delivery; it encompasses public and private, institutional and commercial project experience across New York City, the United States, and internationally. With over 26 years of experience as an architect and team leader, he brings a wealth of knowledge to projects of varying scale and complexity.

His approach exemplifies the style of the firm by combining strong artistic and technical skills with conscientious service and attention to detail. His strengths include a broad and comprehensive knowledge of construction means and methods. He has a keen ability to identify potential challenges, as well as opportunities for augmenting a design.

Michael plays a critical role in ensuring that the firm’s core mission is ultimately embodied in the physical realization of each project, while maintaining the integrity of the client’s vision and brand identity. He is responsible for guarding against the erosion of conceptual ideas while ensuring the project’s feasibility, constructability, and compliance with applicable building regulations.

Michael serves as Principal-in-Charge of the firm’s K-12 school and educational architecture projects in New York. Five of the firm’s designs for Pre-K-12 schools were featured in Building Great Schools for a Great City, by ORO Publications.

As Principal-in-Charge and Design Director, Michael oversees project vision, objectives, and client alignment, serving as a primary point of contact and remaining involved throughout all phases of a project—from conceptual design through construction and occupancy—ensuring continuity, feasibility, and design integrity.

Joining MDSA in 2000, Michael was named Principal in 2014. As an experienced Principal and Project Manager, he brings expertise in the administration and oversight of all phases of a project. He excels in the critical role of managing, supporting, and coordinating the contributions of professional colleagues within a collaborative studio environment.

Mr. Freedman earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the New York Institute of Technology. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects and a Registered Architect in New York, New Jersey, and Maryland.
